Settlers wagered on horse races across the state that were both part of larger events and an everyday activity. Winning horses were among early settlers’ most valuable possessions.
Today, our forefathers wouldn’t know what to think about the horse tracks that cover the state. Or, would they have ever dreamed that even the state’s dog tracks offer gambling opportunities for races all across the world through simulcasting or televised races. What they would appreciate is that horse races are still a popular form of entertainment in Texas and one of the best gambling opportunities in the state whether at the raceway or through online wagering.
As of 2009 there are seven licensed horse tracks and three licensed dog tracks in Texas, and over 100 nationwide. Two of the horse tracks, Saddle Back Park near Amarillo, and Austin Jockey Club in Travis County are not yet operational. Three Texas racing tracks have horse wagering online available through our sportsbook.
The Texas Racing Commission has regulated Texas horse and dog tracks since 1987. It consists of six members representing veterinarians, greyhound and horse racing specialists, appointed by the governor. Two ex officio members, the Chair of the Public Safety Commission and the Comptroller of Public Accounts, also sit on the commission.
The commission is charged with encouraging horse-breeding and greyhound-breeding industries in Texas; awarding licenses for pari-mutuel racetracks; providing strict regulation and control of horse and greyhound racing; supervising each race meeting conducted in Texas; and adjudicating disciplinary matters arising from the enforcement of laws associated with racing and pari-mutuel betting.
